The “green movement” is gaining some steam in the general public, and hey I am all for it.  As long as it doesn’t become a fad that fades away into a footnote like slap bracelets and Crocks. The Apple iPhone is the hottest smart phone going today, and with over 65,000 applications in the iTunes App Store and counting, the usefulness of this pocket device goes up all the time. This can only mean that there will be green apps on the iPhone, and of course there will be some clunkers. With all these apps floating around there must be some gems as well. I’ll give some apps a try and tell you what I think, so you, my loyal reader, doesn’t have to.

GoodGuide by GoodGuide

iTunes Rating: 2.5/5

The Skinny: GoodGuide helps you find safe, healthy, and green products while you are shopping at the store.

My Review: GoodGuide is a nice little app that rates grocery items from food, to soap, to household cleaners on 4 different categories: Health/Nutrition, Environmental, Social, and Overall rating. GoodGuide also gives nutritional value for food products. Another nice feature for vegans, vegetarians, or those who want to avoid red dye #36, is a list of ingredients. The ingredients list is color coded to tell you all of the concerning items.

I don’t think I personally would walk around with GoodGuide as I shopped at the store. It could turn a trip to the store into an all day excursion. However, if there is an item I’m curious about I would look it up using GoodGuide. It also checks Amazon.com for price comparison. It is also nice for those of you who just want to eat healthy. I would check this one out, and hey it’s free.

Mission Zero by Interface, Inc.

The Skinny: Mission Zero Sustainability News is a companion application for MissionZero.org

My Review: Mission Zero is an environmental news aggregation service and voting system ala Digg. There are numerous categories where news stories are submitted, voted on, and commented on. I like the idea of Mission Zero, but the one problem is the user base seems to be a bit anemic. The votes seem to range from 0-5. I hope more people jump on to Mission Zero and make this app more useful.

Go Green by Webworks and Applications

The Skinny: You get a new green tip each time you visit the app.

My Review: Go Green is a simple application. You open the app and it pops up with a new green tip. It has a nice little gimmick, where the more you open it, the more grandiose your green title becomes. This one isn’t bad, but the novelty is sure to run down quickly. Still, I would check it out. You are bound to run into a tip that you can use.

Piqqo Projects by Piqqo

The Skinny: An online service for presenting carbon reduction projects.

My Review: Piqqo Projects is an app I’m torn about. It is a good idea, and it is implemented nicely. They show different carbon reducing projects, they explain the project, have youtube videos on the project, and nice looking photos from the project. It is a great looking package. However, there are only 5 different projects, and they are only located in Mexico, Hungary, and Ecuador. I would like to see some projects from various locations. Hopefully this app will expand because I see the potential.

iLocavore by Oh My Brain, Inc.

The Skinny: A tool for “locavores” shop local, buy local.

My Review: iLocavore is a decent enough idea. Environmentalists are into the whole buying local thing, as it reduces your carbon footprint dramatically. Unfortunately, when I searched my area (a relatively large city) no results came up. Looking at the iTunes reviews, it seems to be a common problem. Looks like iLocavore needs to expand it’s database before this becomes truly useful. We shall wait and see.

Carbon Tracker by Clear Standards, Inc. and Carbon Calc by Carbon Harmony

iTunes Rating: 2.5/5 for both

The Skinny: Outlines your Carbon Footprint

My Review: I put these two apps together because they do basically the same thing. The one difference is Carbon Tracker tracks your monthly carbon footprint against goals you set, where Carbon Calc allows you to compare against the average Carbon Footprint in the US, Europe, and the World. This is a matter of personal preference. Carbon Calc has a few more features, such as offsetting your carbon, but if you want to keep on tracking yourself monthly pick Carbon Tracker. If you are into tracking your carbon footprint often, check these out, otherwise it is a one look and done.

Problem

Almost one half of non-human primates are at risk of extinction, and none more so than gorillas. Gorillas are disappearing at an alarming rate, mostly a victim of their surroundings. Political unrest, wars, poachers, miners, and loggers all converging in a perfect storm of brutality and human depravity, killing one of our closest living relatives. Gorilla’s DNA is 98-99% an exact match for human DNA, just barely trailing our closest living relatives (genus Pan, chimpanzees and bonobos). Unfortunately for the gorillas, they occupy a region rich in tin, diamonds, gold and coltan (a rare mineral used to create capacitors for cellphones, games consoles and laptops).

There are actually 2 different species of gorillas, and up to 6 different sub-species, although there is some debate about lumping or splitting the phylogeny. It makes little difference as all species of gorillas are endangered. All live in tropical or sub tropical areas of Africa. Gorillas are highly intelligent. Famously, the gorilla Koko was taught American Sign Language. She understands over 2,000 words and carries on conversations. Koko also cares for several cats, one of the few non-humans to have pets.

UN’s Solution to the Problem

At the dawn of this year, the United Nations declared 2009 “The Year of The Gorilla.” With good reason, despite conservation efforts, gorilla populations continue to plummet. If all of the warring, political unrest, poaching, logging, and destroying of habitat were not enough of a threat, there has been a recent outbreak of Ebola Virus which has devastated gorilla populations. Ebola has an even higher mortality rate in gorillas than it does in humans.

The UN’s plan is to link gorilla conservation with reducing global poverty by 2015. The logic is to eliminate  people’s need to chop down forest or hunt for bushmeat by eliminating poverty. The plan provides for the creation of parks to provide jobs and, if you can turn gorillas into tourist attractions, then enough money will flow in to convince even the poorest African governments to protect gorillas.

Why Many Say the UN’s Plan is a Mistake

It has all the check marks of a well rounded plan. Help humans? Check. Help gorillas? Check. Eliminate poverty? Check. However, many gorilla experts are not buying what the UN is selling. They argue that by the time all of these parks are set up, poverty eliminated, local governments convinced to protect gorillas, it will be too late. The critics believe that gorillas are disappearing too quickly for this plan to work, and if poaching isn’t stopped, there won’t be any gorillas to provide jobs or attract tourist dollars. Plus with the political unrest in many areas of Africa, tourist parks cannot be run efficiently enough to protect the gorillas.

“If you try to make saving gorillas a development issue, then you will fail.” - Peter Walsh, expert on Gorilla Distribution.

Many see the UN’s plan as too long term. The problem for many conservationists is that they believe that there will not be a long term for gorillas if urgent action is not taken now. They argue that the only thing that money should be spent on at the moment is putting an end to hunting, which kills thousands of gorillas every year, and preventing outbreaks of Ebola.

“Unless drastic action is taken, more than 80 per cent of western lowland gorillas will have gone in just three gorilla generations.” - Fiona Maisels, surveyor for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).

Gorillas are already protected by law in all 10 countries they habituate. That has not stopped poachers and bushmeat hunters. Hunting remains a big business on the black market, with the selling of gorilla heads as trophies and gorilla hands as ashtrays, and bushmeat is sold openly even in major towns. However, with local governments in disarray there is little anyone can do about enforcing the gorilla protection. Many argue that the time for diplomacy is over. It is time to take action.

Conclusion

As someone who has studied gorillas up close, my heart is broken by these hard times. When you look into a gorillas eyes you see a gentleness that washes over you. They are relatively peaceful species especially compared to their cousins, chimpanzees, bonobos, and especially humans. These are not the brutes or beasts that have been portrayed in the movies. We have heard the story of the little boy falling into a gorilla pen, only to be picked up and consoled by a waiting gorilla.

I think back to Dian Fosse who was sent to study gorillas after the success of Jane Goodall with chimps. Dian Fossey crusaded for gorillas, thwarting poachers whenever she could. Outspoken and an activist, Fosse brought on the wrath of poachers. When poachers decapitated and left the body of her favorite gorilla in her study group, Digit (for a price of $20), it caused her to redouble her efforts, creating The Digit Fund for anti-poaching. Dian Fossey was brutally murdered by machete, a conspiracy perpetrated by either poachers who wanted her out of the way, or those who wanted to exploit gorillas as tourist attractions. Fossey was buried next to Digit. Her friend.

When I think back to Fossey, it angers me that sacrifices she made for these intelligent creatures could all be in vain.

Is it too late? Is the UN making a huge mistake? I applaud the UN for taking action. In declaring 2009 “The Year of the Gorilla.” But, it scares me that many gorilla experts believe that it is too late for the UN’s plan of action. What can we do?

What can you do?

• Recycle your old cell phones - Reduce the demand for coltan. Eco-Cell has run a cash-for-phones scheme since 2003 and now has drop bins at more than 100 zoos in both the US and Canada. Eco-Cell also accepts all digital handhelds including Game Boys.

• Check for the FSC logo on timber products - FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council. They insure lumber is not taken from remote forests, creating roads for commercial hunters.

• Write to your Member of Congress and raise three issues - Ask them for more funding to fight Ebola, to stop imports of non-certified wood into Europe and the US, and to push for the EU and USAID to do more to address the problem of bushmeat hunting.

• Donate money, but check where it’s going - check out www.wildlifedirect.org. It is a good place to start.

The UN’s plan may or may not work, time will tell, but it is up to all of us to take action now. We can not watch idly by as one of our family members is destroyed. Gorillas are part of our primate family, and we should start treating them as such.

A few days ago I learned that someone very important to me’s mother was not in good shape. She has been fighting cancer for many years now. Fighting the fight that unfortunately many of us have seen, either first or second hand. This article is dedicated to her. Please send your thoughts, prayers, positive energy or whatever you personally believe her way.

Cancer is defined as any group of cells that display uncontrolled growth. Nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic code that create the cells in our body. These abnormalities could be caused by pollutants, chemicals, sunshine, hormones, microbes, or just random bad luck. There are many ways to damage the fragile DNA that lives inside almost all of the cells in our bodies.

Cancer does not just harm humans. I grew up in Monterey, CA, a place famous for its majestic pine trees standing like sentries looking over the ocean. Every year for Christmas we would go to a Christmas Tree farm. It was a magical place, filled the the smell of pine trees and grass. It was basically just a huge park filled with pines. (I can see the horror coming over most of your faces. These were the days before the popularization of those cheesy plastic trees, and I assure you that for every tree cut down, there was a tree planted in it’s place). Even as a child I could appreciate the reforesting of the park because every year I would come back, and every year I was amazed that we would cut down a tree for Christmas, like many other families, and every year there seemed to be even more trees than the year before.

That is however, until Monterey pines started getting pine pitch canker. A type of tree cancer caused by fungus infection. I will always remember the year that we went to the Christmas tree farm, and hardly any trees stood where there was always a majestic forest of pines. There was a kindly old man who owned the park, whom we would talk to every year. I will always remember the disappointment on his face when he described that his once lush park had been devastated by pitch canker. I think this moment made me question how things work. It was one of the seeds that grew my interest in science. That forest spare and depleted really meant something more. For everything that happens in life good or bad, they always leave a legacy.

Yet, for most of us we aren’t dealing with pine trees. We watch helplessly as our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters fight against their own biology. As a medical student, I know how notoriously difficult most cancers are to treat. It is our own body’s cells betraying us. To fight cancer we have to destroy our bodies. Usually with doses of chemicals or radiation which will kill rapidly dividing cancer cells just a little bit more quickly than our non-cancer cells.

Cancer has touched us all in one way or another. Some more than others. I urge you all to watch The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, or read the book. It is an inspirational tale that will leave you in tears, but really highlights what is important in this short journey on earth that we call life. I am better off for having watched it, and I think you will be too.

Since cancer has touched us all in one way or another, I urge you all to join me in fighting cancer. Do it through whatever means you have. If you have money please donate to some of the reputable charities I have listed below.

As a pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (or PAH’s as we call them in the business), are of concern because they have been identified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic (not good things if you were wondering). PAHs are created as a byproduct of the burning of coal, oil, and fossil fuels. Often they are of concern in urban areas where there is a higher carbon footprint, and it forms that nice cloud of yellow smoke you see floating over some of your major cities.

Now, new research out of Columbia University is showing that exposure to PAHs, can reduce neonate’s intelligence. The study performed in New York city where PAHs are in no short demand, showed IQ scores that were 4.31 and 4.67 points lower, respectively than those of less exposed children.

The children were followed from in utero to 5 years of age, while the mothers wore air monitors during pregnancy to measure exposure to PAHs. At 5 years of age the children were given IQ tests, and after adjustment for maternal intelligence, quality of the home caretaking environment, environmental tobacco smoke exposure, and other potentially confounding factors; exposure to high PAH levels in utero showed statistically significant lower IQ scores.

So don’t everyone go rush out of the major cities because you are afraid of losing all your smarts. That will just make even more traffic, and I hate traffic. However, if you are a pregnant woman you might want to consider a less urban environment. I recommend an island, or some other tropical locale.

GreenOptions is going through some changes. Virgance is selling off GreenOptions while retaining the 2 most viewed blogs. Don’t know what is going to happen with my writing “career” or the book at this moment. I shot the new editor a lot of ideas on how to make the relaunch successful, and frankly I really have not been working on the book at all. PCOM has taken up all my time lately.

I have also started re-publishing all my articles here. So they can be saved for an eternity.

July 20th, 2009 was the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic flight to the moon, where astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first human beings to walk on the moon. 40 years ago, space flight inspired such awe that astronauts were hailed as heroes and celebrities by men, women, and children alike. 40 years later none of us, besides the most avid space fanatic, would likely to be able to name one astronaut in service today.

Despite the tragedies of Space Shuttle Challenger, and later Columbia, where the world is shocked into being reminded of the inherit dangers of sitting on 1 million gallons of rocket fuel, or re-entering the earth’s atmosphere at 1,870 miles per hour. We all see space flight as mundane because the vast majority of space flights since Apollo 11, have been mostly conducting seemingly routine scientific experiments. Now don’t get me wrong, I believe in the importance of science in space, but these experiments don’t exactly inspire awe in the general population like, oh say, a manned mission to Mars would. We also don’t have the fever of beating those damned Ruskies because they might go to space and blow us all up, which we had during the height of the cold war when Apollo 11 touched down on the lunar Sea of Tranquility.

Watching some fantastic documentaries (such as Discovery’s When We Left Earth) celebrating the 40th anniversary this week, I got to thinking about the importance of continuing space exploration. I hear many people decry the importance of NASA and space flight. Most saying that it is a waste of time, and more importantly money. I disagree with such assessments. I often wonder if people threw out the same criticisms of our European ancestors, who dared to explore on wooden ships to discover “the new world.”

In my humble opinion, space exploration is important not only to humanity’s curiosity of the great beyond, but it is also important for the future of the earth and all of us living on it. So here I will count down “Houston style,” my top 5 reasons why space exploration is important for the world.

5. Promote Science Education - The Apollo missions inspired a whole generation of kids who wanted to grow up to be astronauts, rocket scientists, and engineers. We all know that science education has been slightly lacking in the United States as of late. Don’t you think that NASA’s return to the moon, or more importantly the much anticipated manned mission to Mars will again inspire a whole new generation to reach for the stars so to speak? I do.

4. NASA’s Environmental Research - You would think that the guys who burn a million pounds of rocket fuel wouldn’t be the most environmentally minded people in the world, or out of the world as it may be. However, most people don’t know that NASA does a lot of good environmental research while they are up there looking down at all of us. NASA has done a lot of work in studying air quality, climate change, alternative energy, and near earth objects; which as we all know from the movies can destroy the earth any day now without warning, unless we have a group of oil drillers, a nuke, and Bruce Willis.

3. Eliminate Earth Over Population - The current earth population is almost 6.8 BILLION people. Arguably beyond the carrying capacity of the earth already. The big dream is space colonization. We need somewhere to put all these people, or we all might end up living in skyscrapers, see all animal’s habitats destroyed, and smog up the air beyond what is breathable (see: China).

2. Natural Resources - Related to over population, we are burning through the earth’s natural resources pretty quickly. Out in space there is virtually unlimited resources. It is all just a matter of collecting it and bringing it back, which granted will not be an easy task. Still… it is virtually unlimited natural resources! There will be no more excuses for hiking up prices on barrels of oil. (Although hopefully we will have moved far beyond oil by then).

1. Put Ourselves into Perspective - From space earth is really small. From space earth is really fragile. Sometimes I think it would be a good thing to put our place in the universe into perspective.  I don’t go into your house light up a stogy, start pulling up your carpet, kick down your door, and then kill your cat. Yet, we as the human species have been doing that to our own home the earth for quite a while now. If we start seeing how small and fragile we are out there floating in space, maybe, just maybe we will not be so prone to abusing our one true home.

Blast Off! Here’s to the men and women who gave their lives to explore the great unknown. We cannot ignore the importance of space exploration, nor be complacent in it’s meaning to all of us. I hope space exploration can continue to inspire, educate, and provide for us in the next 40 years as it has the last 40 years.

Most of us know the sad and destructive history of former widespread pesticide DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane for you chemists). It’s egg shell thining properties have famously taken out many a generation of bald eagle, as well as many other bird species. The once heralded solution to malaria, DDT was sprayed everywhere without a thought. This attitude of pesticide being “a-ok” lasted into the 1980’s, and lead to this most hilarious and sad poster (seen above) of two attractive young ladies having a pesticide fight. Try suggesting that one these days as a fun game for the whole family.

When environmental and health concerns were raised in the scientific community, an out cry called for the banning of DDT, and in 1972 the ban went into effect. Unfortunately for all of us, the half life of DDT is 30 years. So for those of us scoring at home, there is still almost half the DDT left floating around in our environment that was sprayed the year of the ban… 37 years ago!

I, perhaps like some of you, have heard of studies linking DDT with cancer. For many years DDT has been linked with many different types of cancer. The notion that DDT can cause cancer is well published and seems to have sunk into the public’s consciousness as just common knowledge. If nothing else, I think we all associate pesticide as something we don’t want to be sprayed all over our bodies.

New studies are bringing to light a new health detriment that has not been well publicized. There is mounting evidence that DDT is linked to diabetes. New research out of the great lakes area has shown that high levels of the DDT led to a 38% higher chance of developing diabetes.

As GreenOption’s resident medical student, I can tell you diabetes has become a very large problem in the United States. 23 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes. Diabetics cannot produce (type I) or use enough (type II) insulin, a hormone that allows glucose (the body’s fuel) to enter cells.

The exact mechanism is still unknown, and the study did not differentiate between type I and type II diabetes. Obviously more research will be needed to nail down the exact link between DDT and diabetes. I just hope we can all use our past mistakes as a cautionary tale. Let us not put substances into the environment without, at the very least, understanding all of the consequences. 37 years after the spraying of a once praised pesticide, humans and other animals are still paying the price.

In 2003 “Nature” published a study showing that 90% of the large fish living in our oceans were fished out of existence. A group of scientists recently predicted, major seafood stocks will collapse by 2048. This is a staggering number, considering the technology and amount of people needed to cause overfishing is a relatively new phenomenon, starting really only in the late 19th century.

Most governments have shrugged these claims off, and continued their fishing practices. Alaska has shown to be the only sovereign state willing to self-police their fishing practices. Sarah Palin jokes aside… Threatened with the loss of one of its top industries, Alaska began limiting the number of fishing vessels, restricting the size of their catches; and perhaps most importantly, giving incentives to fishermen. Alaska currently gives fishermen a stake in the long-term viability of salmon and other fish.

Alaska’s policies have shown that governments can prevent the onslaught being brought forth on our oceans, yet their policies are the exception to the rule. Only about 6% of the global fish catch is certified as “sustainable,” meaning that fish are not pulled from the ocean faster than they can reproduce and are not caught in ways to protect underwater habitats. Much of the 6% of sustainable catch comes from Alaska itself.

Fish and other marine animals help maintain the ocean’s ecosystem. Fish eat algae and keep microbes in check. Overfishing accelerates the spread of algae and microbes, which smother coral reefs and create “dead zones” in coastal waters that starve most sea life of oxygen. In other words, disturbing the balance of the ecosystem by overfishing creates a vicious cycle that sucks even more life from our oceans.

The problem lies with humans’ emotional detachment from our oceans. Large parts of our oceans here on earth go unexplored, while planets not of this earth are meticulously studied. The ocean is foreign to most humans; we cannot live in them, and it is not sustainable for our type of living (namely, breathing air). This emotional detachment has allowed us to go on slaughtering animals that make up our oceans.

Like most problems our environment faces, education is the key. We must educate what overfishing does to not only our environment, but to our economy. When 2048 comes along, and major economic fishing stocks have collapsed, it will be a sad day for environmentalists and fishermen alike. I hope that everyone can look at the example that Alaska has given us. The key to solving this problem is having scientists and fishermen working together to protect a common interest. Only then will future heartbroken generations be able to hear the phrase: “Well, there are plenty of fish in the sea.”
